WA mine safety inquest begins

Update:2009-06-24 22:28:45 Source:    Author:

AN INQUEST into the death of mine worker Andrew John Morton has begun.

Morton was working at Consolidated Minerals' Beta Hunt nickel mine at Kambalda, Western Australia when he was crushed in a rockfall.

The coronial inquest has already heard from the mine's underground manager, Michael John Aspinall who told the courts that there was nothing to indicate the area in which Morton died was unstable.

But Aspinall has admitted that the number of rock bolts supporting the area was at least one fewer than required by minimum standards.

The inquest continues.
